Easiest way to make a Chicken Rig

Instructional Videos

In this quick walkthrough, Jeremy demonstrates how to tie a simple and effective double hook chicken rig for deep drop fishing.

The setup starts with the main line, 30 lb test is used here, though lighter line is recommended where possible, as it cuts through the water more efficiently, allows the use of a lighter weight, and improves bite detection. The main line is tied to a swivel, with about three feet of line coming off it.

From there, the process is straightforward: create 4–5 inch loops using figure eight knots rather than square knots, which can slip, at two points along the line and one at the bottom. The bottom loop connects to the weight (20 oz in this case), while the two upper loops are used to attach the hooks. Jeremy's go-to is the size 2/0 Mustad Tuna Circle hook, chosen for its large eye that makes threading easy and its reliable hook-up rate for keeping fish connected.

With the rig assembled and dropped in 2–3 knots of current, the result speaks for itself, a great hands-on method for targeting snapper that lets you feel every bite.
